The Final Phase Of The Election Will Take Place On March 5th
This morning, voting started in the northeastern state of Manipur in a contest between the BJP-led coalition and several smaller parties. There are elections in 38 of the 60 states today.
Over 10% of the 38 seats in five districts had been filled by 9 a.m. 29 seats in the valley districts of Imphal West, Imphal East, and Bishnupur will be up for election today. Kangpokpi, Churachandpur, and Pherzawl hill districts are home to the rest.
NPP chief Conrad Sangma of Meghalaya is one of three political parties vying for 38 of the state’s senate seats, together with BJP and Congress candidates. Ex-coalition partners the BJP, the National People’s Party, and the Naga People’s Front have decided to run for office on their own, citing dissatisfaction with the N Biren Singh government. The Janata Dal United is running in the state elections after a two-decade break.
Congress won 28 of the state’s 60 seats in the 2017 elections, making it the only major party in Manipur. A coalition of the National People’s Party and Naga People’s Front ushered in a state administration despite the BJP winning 21 seats.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Union Home Minister Amit Shah have been making political appearances all throughout the state in a high-voltage campaign. Fear has been instilled in opposition parties by the Kuki National Organization, an armed underground organization, which has “appealed” to Hill dwellers to vote for the BJP.
In Manipur, the Congress party is fighting for its life after losing substantial support in the northeast since 2014. It has been claimed by ex-Chairman Ibobi Singh that the party is trying to secure a deal in order to act fast if they do not win a majority but emerge as the single biggest party in a hung parliament.
