Amin Patel, a Congress MLA, has petitioned the Bombay High Court to remove the words ‘Kamathipura’ and ‘Kathiawadi’ from the name Gangubai Kathiawadi
Gangubai Kathiawadi, directed by Sanjay Leela Bhansali and starring Alia Bhatt, will hit theatres in a matter of days. While the video is causing a stir on social media, it continues to run afoul of the law. This time, Maharashtra Congress MLA Amin Patel has petitioned the Bombay High Court to modify the film’s title and delete other phrases, arguing that it represents Kamathipura as a red-light district and the Kathiawadi people negatively. On Wednesday, February 23, 2022, the same will be heard.
According to News18, the petition said that “if the video is released under the title Kamathipura, it will bring grief and contempt to the residents, especially women.”
Shradha Surve, a Kamathipura resident, requested an accelerated hearing before a division bench of Justices Gautam Patel and Madhav Jamdar on Tuesday, citing the film’s planned release date of February 25, 2022. Similarly, Congress MLA Amin Patel filed a similar petition before a division bench of Chief Justice Dipankar Datta and Justice M S Karnik. The petition asked for the name to be changed to Mayapuri or Mayanagri and claimed that “not even 5% of the Kamathipura neighborhood is engaged in prostitution.”
